Recent statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveal a troubling rise in workplace fatalities due to falls from height. In 2023/24, falls from height accounted for 36% of the 138 work-related deaths in Great Britain, marking a significant increase from previous years (HSE Website) (Access Industry Forum).
Despite advancements in safety protocols and heightened awareness, the number of fatalities continues to rise. Particularly alarming is the 44% increase in fall-related deaths among the self-employed, with 26 fatalities reported in 2023/24 compared to 18 in the previous year. This marks the highest number of self-employed fatalities in over two decades (Access Industry Forum) (HSM Search).
Understanding the Causes
The Access Industry Forum (AIF) points to inadequate reporting systems that focus more on the type of incident rather than the underlying causes. This lack of detailed data makes it difficult to identify and address the root causes of these accidents, such as faulty equipment, insufficient training, or negligence (HSM Search) (Safesite).
PRR Safety’s Commitment
At PRR Safety, we are committed to addressing this issue. Our goals align with those of the AIF and No Falls Foundation. We aim to:
- Enhance Training Programmes: Ensure all workers are thoroughly trained in height safety and understand the risks and precautions necessary to prevent falls.
- Improve Equipment Standards: Advocate for stricter regulations and regular inspections to ensure all safety equipment meets the highest standards.
- Support Better Reporting Systems: Push for a streamlined and detailed incident reporting system to better understand the causes of falls and develop effective preventive measures.
- Promote Legislative Action: Support the re-establishment of the APPG on Working at Height and other legislative efforts aimed at improving workplace safety.
We urge industry stakeholders, policymakers, and safety professionals to get ahead of the issue. By working together, we can implement robust safety measures, enhance reporting accuracy, and ultimately reduce the number of tragic fatalities resulting from falls from height.
