Enhancing quality at the Port of Tilbury with our unique knowledge and experience.
We worked alongside the main contractor, PJ Careys Ltd, and the client, Port of Tilbury
on the multimillion-pound rebuild of this import/export terminal. The client required our
unique skills, resources, and experience to ensure that the highly technical construction
works proceeded without a hitch.
The overall aim of the project was to replace the existing concrete silo four structure
that was
built in the late 50s and early 60s with an up-to-date set of new silos. A ‘slipform’
method of
concrete construction was used throughout.
Following the completion of the slipform silos, brand-new bulk material handling
equipment
was to be installed for loading and unloading to other silos, HGV and ships. Modern
engineering principles and equipment safeguards were required for this complex
operation.
Acting as the clerk of works with specific expertise in construction, engineering and
design of bulk materials handling, processing equipment and facilities. We were part of
a small client-focused team monitoring and advising on the entire process, from
high-level design to managing the final remedial aspects of the project.
We had previously acted in this capacity for an interconnected project on the adjacent
silo storage area which provided us with invaluable and transferable knowledge. Our
proven history not only on the adjacent site, but also in the wider field of construction,
maintenance engineering, and upgrading of silos and bulk materials handling facilities,
made us an ideal choice for the client.
Specifically, our experience with assets used for the transportation, storage and
outloading
of food ingredient raw materials produced in agriculture proved to be extremely
useful.
Not only could we monitor the ongoing construction works at a site level but had the
technical knowledge and understanding to question any areas of the installation that
didn’t
seem appropriate from an engineering, technical and operational vantage point.
Ian Wright, Civil Engineer at The Port of Tilbury, said, “The Port of Tilbury’s grain terminal
is an important asset for our business and to the UK’s grain market. PRR were very
supportive to the whole of the port team, and we appreciated their professionalism and
proactivity in dealing with the silo construction rebuild project. The PRR team were
effective communicators, which is an important attribute when working on a project of
this scale.”
