The Grenfell Tower Inquiry published its phase 2 report early last month, more than 7 years on from the tragic fire that claimed 72 lives.
Phase 1 of the inquiry addressed the events on the night of the fire, with phase 2 investigating the underlying causes and mistakes, making key recommendations to ensure that a similar disaster does not happen again.

The findings of the inquiry underline growing concerns in the industry regarding safety standards, with the construction industry being called upon to ‘play their part’ in reforming standards within the sector. Thouria Istephan, a Grenfell inquiry panel member and health and safety expert said, ‘If you work in the construction industry and you do not feel the weight of responsibility you have for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job.’
Failings were found at almost every stage of the process, with one theme emerging prominently: the importance of robust fire risk assessments. These assessments are essential to maintain the safety of both residential and commercial buildings.

One of the key criticisms in the report was the lack of accountability and experience of those involved in fire risk assessments. The importance of relevant training, qualifications and experience of those who carry out these assessments was heavily underlined, alongside regular and comprehensive assessments to review compliance with safety standards.

The tragic events at Grenfell have reminded us of the potentially fatal consequences of neglecting fire safety. Fire risk assessments are not just a legal requirement, but a moral duty. Ensuring that they are conducted with diligence, expertise, and a genuine commitment to safety is the only way to move forward.

At PRR Safety, we offer thorough fire risk assessments, carried out by NEBOSH fire-trained personnel. Our in-depth assessments look at fire risk based on hazards, likelihood of fire, and control measures that may be required. Our team will then offer clear and actionable recommendations to make sure your business is compliant.
